Bajau

The Bajau are an indigenous ethnic group of Malaysia and the southern Philippines. Although native to the southern Philippines, due to escalated conflicts in the Sulu Archipelago in the southern part of the country, many of the Bajau had migrated to neighboring Malaysia over the course of 50 years, where currently they are the second largest ethnic group in the state of Sabah, making up 13.4%.

Anglo-Saxons is the term usually used to describe the invading Germanic tribes in the south and east of Great Britain from the early 5th century AD, and their creation of the English nation, to the Norman conquest of 1066. The Benedictine monk, Bede, identified them as the descendants of three Germanic tribes

1. The Angles, who may have come from Angeln, and Bede wrote that their whole nation came to Britain, leaving their former land empty. The name 'England' (Anglo-Saxon 'Engla land' or 'Ængla land' originates from this tribe.

2. The Saxons, from Lower Saxony or Niedersachsen, Germany

3. The Jutes, from the Jutland peninsula.

Their language (Old English) derives from "Ingvaeonic" West Germanic dialects and transforms into Middle English from the 11th century. Old English was divided into four main dialects: West Saxon, Mercian, Northumbrian and Kentish.

The Zulu were originally a major clan in what is today Northern KwaZulu-Natal, founded in 1709 by Zulu kaNtombhela. In the Nguni languages, iZulu or iliZulu or liTulu means heaven, or sky. At that time, the area was occupied by many large Nguni communities and clans. Nguni communities had migrated down Africa's east coast over thousands of years, as part of the Bantu migrations probably arriving in what is now South Africa in about the 9th century A.D. The last king of the Zulu Empire was Cetshwayo who fought against the invading forces of the British Empire. The Zulus were able to hold of the 1st invasion by the British Empire. Nevertheless, a 2nd invasion force was able to take the Ulundi, the capital of Zulu Kingdom. This mark the end of the Zulu Empire.

365 Youth Camp 2009 Briefing

In order to maximize your enjoyment during the camp, you are required to obey certain camp guidelines.

1.0 Common ethics
1.1 Behaviour
• Maintain appropriate conduct throughout the duration of camp (e.g. no fighting, bullying, sleeping in during sessions, littering, etc.).
• Turn OFF your hand phones during the sessions to reduce distractions. Maintain decorum when the Speaker is preaching and during the altar calls.

1.2 Attendance
• Be punctual for all events (sessions, games, quiet time, dorm moments). All campers are not allowed to leave the premises of the campsite without permission from the Commandant and are expected to attend ALL sessions.
• Light-outs rule (11 p.m.) to be obeyed without any questions.

1.3 Participation
• All campers are to take part in the workshops, games and other activities (Tribal Night, Talent Time, Photo Session, Games).

1.4 Prohibited Items
• Cards, lighters, cigarettes, inappropriate magazines, books, unnecessary valuables (jewellery, laptops, PSP). Hand phones and cameras are allowed but campers must be watchful over these belongings at all times.

2.0 Items to bring/Attire
2.1 For Sessions/Entire Stay in Camp
• Long pants, warm clothing, jackets and sweaters, extra socks (the overall temperature in the campsite is between 10 to 18 degrees Celsius. Campers are encouraged to bring extra socks and clothing as it is chilly at night).

• No shorts, miniskirts, inappropriate clothing.
• Toiletries (tooth brush, toothpaste, cleanser, soap, shampoo) and towels.
• Regular changes of underclothes and socks.
• Water bottle.
• Some money – Max RM20 (Campers will be stopping by the BOH tea plantation on the last day).
• Mosquito repellent if especially prone to mosquito bites.
• Travel sickness tablets
• Any special, personal medication if required.

2.2 For Games
• Sports attire.
• Good shoes and dark coloured T-Shirts.

2.3 For Tribal Night
• Clothing according to the theme (Tribal/Traditional).

2.4 For Angels and Mortals game
• Small gifts and cards to encourage your “Mortal”.
The buses will leave FGT at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, 13th Dec. Campers may bring their bags into the church hall and leave them at the back. We will be dividing you into 3 buses, so there will be 3 main bag sections. For admin purposes, be at church at 1 p.m. SHARP. Buses are expected to arrive in church around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, 16th Dec.

The Manchu people are a Tungusic people who originated in Manchuria (today's northeastern China). Mohawk (cognate with the Narraganset Mohowaùuck, 'they eat (animate) things,' hence 'man-eaters') The most easterly tribe of the Iroquois confederation. They called themselves Kaniengehaga, 'people of the place of the flint.' The Mohawk have only 3 clans, namely, the Bear, the Wolf, and the Turtle. The tribe is represented in the council by 9 chiefs of the rank of Roianer (highest honor) being 3 from every clan. These chiefships were known by specific names, which were conferred with the office. The Conestoga a tribe to the south waged war against them so vigorously for 10 years that the Mohawk were overthrown so completely that they appeared to be almost extinct. However about this time the Dutch arrived, and furnished the Mohawk with firearms to trade for beaver skins. This trade agreement, brought the Mohawk victories after victories in conquering back their adversaries.

Kadazan

The Kadazans are an ethnic group indigenous to the state of Sabah in Malaysia. They came from Mongolia and mixed with Chinese people from China. They are found mainly on the west coast of Sabah, the surrounding locales, and various locations in the interior. The name "Navajo" comes from the late 18th century via the Spanish which was derived from the Tewa navahū which means "fields adjoining a ravine". The Navajo call themselves Diné, which means "the people". The Navajo were semi-nomadic from the 16th through the 20th centuries. They lived in round houses known as hogans. Hogans are houses of forked poles and brush covered with earth. This style of housing is distinctive to the Navajo, even going as far as saying that, “even today, a solidly constructed, log walled Hogan is preferred by many Navajo families.” The Navajo would have seasonal dwelling areas to accommodate livestock, agriculture and gathering practices. The Navajo people traditionally hold the FOUR sacred mountains as the boundaries of the homeland they should never leave:

"Banquet Night"

There is an unmistakable scene on the second day of the 365 Youth Camp every year. On this day, one would find the campsite abuzz with activity and movement, as most campers would be unable to conceal their excitement for the event later in the evening. The bathrooms would be teeming with rushing and apprehensive campers, hurrying to put on their costumes and make-up. There would be pockets of laughter in the dormitories as campers compare their outfits with each other. The hallways would be full of unusually-dressed people.

Then, the call would be made, "We are beginning soon!" and campers would make their way to what is known as...."The Banquet Night", dressed according to the theme of the night.

This year, however, there are some new changes to the activities. Campers would not be divided according to games groups, but rather TRIBES, led by tribal chiefs. During what is known as "camp games", tribes will engage in tribal wars and challenges, earning points as they go along.

Thus, in place of the customary Banquet Night would be the "Tribal Night". It would be much like the Banquet Night, except that there will be no pairings or Banquet "couples", for everyone will come in their tribes. (More will be explained during the camp!)

Our theme for the Banquet Night this year is "Tribal & Traditional".

You can all come in outfits which are tribal or traditional in nature, such as the following:

Note: Campers must come fully-dressed and decently attired in their attempts to dress to theme.

About the Camp Speaker

We are both honoured and excited to have Ps. Lin Perry as our camp speaker this year. Some of you may remember him from 365 Youth Camp 2005, and recall how we thoroughly enjoyed listening to his vast array of personal experiences and wartime stories!

Ps. Lin Perry and his wife, Susan Perry currently oversee a fellowship of 30 churches and ministries called Fellowship of Christian Ministries (FCMI) in the USA. They have been planting churches in Mexico for the past 5 years, where there are more than 20 churches and ministries now. Their passion is to make disciples of the nations by training and sending ministers and churches who in turn train and equip the saints to do the work of the ministry.

With a library of experience and a heart to equip, Ps. Lin Perry will definitely be a great encouragement to many campers. We are certain that a fruitful time of learning and 'gleaning' awaits us, and look forward to 'the most anticipated event of the year'!

If I were to ask you, 'What do you want new in your life?', what would your answer be?

Some of you would say...

'I want a new car!'

...because the older the car gets, the more often you may need to service it.

'I want a new attitude towards others and... also a new guitar :D'

...because people are not our exact replica and better guitars produce better music.

'I want new shoes <3'>

...because different outfits match with different shoes.

'I want a new hairstyle :) '

...because we get bored XD

...because we are always learning.

No matter what your answer may be, there is always a motivation behind it. I believe everyone has a desire for something new in their life, be it secular or spiritual. You won't want to stay at where you are forever, would you? And the motivation itself plays a big role. The stronger it is, the more you would think about it, pray about it and finally, strive for it.

'I want a new walk with God in my life'

So, start thinking. Start wanting. And start expecting.

I still remember those life-changing days in youth camp when I felt that everything in me was being put to the test (physically and spiritually). In the youth camp last year, I managed to widen my circle of friends, and in that short period of time I met friends who have been with me through thick and thin ever since. I believe it wasn't just the activities that left a lasting impact on me, rather it was the time spent with the One who created me. Looking back, I learnt many things and now I have a whole new perspective on the journey we call life..Today, that hunger for another great time in youth camp still burns within me..

Actually, truth be told, the first time I went to camp when I was 12, I really did not get much out of it. The only thing that gave a lasting impression was the thing I learnt during the dorm moments, which was that big sacrifices are needed to finish the race for God. Fortunately, in the camps that followed, despite the fact that I did not really expect much and was sceptical that I could even benefit from them, I still learnt a lot and God spoke to me through the experiences of the speakers and other people. Camp is really one the perfect opportunities to get closer to God and just meditate on His Word. It is a rare time that I can spend four full days just with Him. On other days I would be busy with a whole lot of other stuff, sometimes even finding time to praying is difficult. But in camp, there are no other distractions and after spending some time with God, I can really see the difference in my life. Talking to God and listening to His Word can really help me feel His presence and change the way I live. Seriously, to me, camp is nothing but beneficial because it brings me back to the presence of God. Um. Of course, camp is not just about serious stuff. It's fun and it's a great way to spend more time with church buddies. So, no matter how old you are and whether you know much about the Bible or anything, just come for camp and your life will be changed forever. =)

Meaning behind the theme

The basic truth about time as we know it is: it is linear. Whatever that is new will no longer be as bright, fresh, young, clean, pretty or smooth as it once was, one day. With the passing of time, everything changes - from young to old, from fast to slow, from functional to dysfunctional, from useful to useless. The world knows this, and in its worship of the ‘new’ and ‘young’, it avoids the old:

Fashion models are never older than 50

Supermarkets flash big signs with the word “NEW” to attract patrons

And, consumers are unendingly attracted by anything that is new

Yet, as long as we are living within the confines of time, we WILL age and the new WILL turn old. As we walk down the passage of time, we WILL experience mistakes, hurts, disappointments, sorrow, pain and loss. And, because time is linear, we all have something in common that we cannot escape from: our pasts.

The message behind our theme is this: despite your past, you can live in newness of life and enjoy abundance in Christ.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"

Hey young people!

Are you looking forward to the 365 youth camp? Yes, I’m sure you are, because Youth Camp is just four months away! I have to admit, eventhough I’ve been to a few 365 youth camps, there hasn't been a "Best Camp Experience" for me. There really isn't a more memorable one than the other.

Youth Camp is always my most memorable 365 event of the year. There are so many stories that I can go on and on just to share with you - from the games to the banquet night to the dorm moments and to the sessions by the camp speaker. Oh, I’ve so much to tell!

Do you still remember last year’s games? I think one of the games was called the "Bucket Game" (the one in which you place your finger on the bucket and spin 10 times around it and then proceed to run back to our line, remember?) Don’t tell me you didn’t enjoy this game - I loved this game so much despite not being able to play it as a committee member. It was quite entertaining for us, though. Haha!

And I love last year’s Banquet Night too!

Why? ‘Cause I love the decorations, the two emcees, oh, and the outfits! Everyone looked so beautiful and handsome that night. Banquet Night is always my all-time favourite, because this is my only chance to dress up throughout the whole 4 days 3 nights camp.

Besides having fun, dressing up and spending time with good friends, there are also great encounters with God that are worth sharing.

I can still remember a very simple question asked by the camp speaker last year, “Is God enough for you?” It might just be a simple question, but it has indeed spoken to me in a profound way. I still remember how the altar call sessions were so spirit-filled - heads were bowed and hands were raised up high in worship, songs of praise were sung and God’s presence was so strong. Wow, it was so great to see people’s lives changed.

So yes, Youth Camp is approaching! Let’s believe that God will make a difference in our lives.

So, the question is – What do YOU expect in camp?

For most of us, we go to camp to basically spend time with God and friends and have a great time.

FUN FUN FUN :P . Is that what YOU are expecting?

You are so right! That’s a really good answer, honestly.

However,

There’s an even better ANSWER! :D

There is, you may ask?

Yeah, of course (:

Wow. Serious ah?

Absolutely, certainly yes!

So, what is it?

During camp, we’re going to be praising God with all our hearts till our voices turn hoarse and we’re going to be excited for God! Moreover, we always see God’s hand move mightily over everybody during camp. People learn how to dream big for their God, people draw closer to God, people learn that God is real and that they are loved by Him. We see everyone totally giving their hearts to God. In short, everyone goes home from camp blessed. For quite a number of people (everyone in fact), camp is a life-changing experience.

Well, back to the question once more.

What do YOU expect in camp?

Plain simple fun?
A great speaker?
Fantastic, crazy games?
Good food?
Awesome music?
Side-splitting entertainment?
Or something more?

What youth camp is about?

Some of you who are not so familiar with this term or have never been to such a camp might be wondering deep down in your hearts, what is it really about?

Does the 365 Youth Camp promise fun?
The camp can only be as fun as you want it to be =) I still remember attending my first ever camp back in 2005. There were all kind of weird games - bowling with coconuts, crawling through some maze with flour everywhere. But well, it was all fun =)

Does it promise good friendships?
Try spending 4 days 3 nights with a bunch of whacky people =) It really deepens your friendship, especially during the sharing times at night when we talk about what we hear from God and share our personal struggles. To know that there are other people being in the same situation as we are is so comforting, knowing that you're not alone. Strong bond of friendships are established when we share our hearts. So yea, guess it does promise good friendships. I can testify to that =)

And most importantly, does taking time away from a hectic schedule draw you closer to God?
Don't you get fed up, hearing news of all kinds of terrible things going on in the world everyday and in your own country? I guess taking time off from the "world" is a good thing. Camp is a time when you have less distractions and things to worry about; this gives a conducive environment for God to speak to you. It also gives you a better perspective of God and of His character.

So yea, to sum it up, I would say camp is pretty much about drawing near to God and to build better friendships with your friends. =)
